The announcement comes at a time when the Regional Food Bank reports that the demand for services has increased by nearly 30 percent over a three-year period and shows no signs of slowing as the holiday season approaches.
As a result of the donation provided by the Citizens Bank Foundation, the Regional Food Bank has been able to add deliveries and serve residents in Cobleskill/Oneonta (Schoharie and Otsego Counties), Glens Falls (Warren County), Haverstraw (Rockland County), Highland (Ulster County), and Middletown (Orange County).
Through Citizens Bank’s support, the Regional Food Bank has also been able to purchase turkeys and other holiday food supplies through access to wholesale pricing that enables it to generate $10 worth of food for every dollar spent.
“Food is a necessity at all times and takes on additional meaning during the holidays,” said James P. Gaspo, President, Citizens Bank New York. “Holidays are times to celebrate the past and present as well as give hope for the future. Citizens Bank is honored to assist the Regional Food Bank in helping more people embrace the holiday season, especially in communities that were recently outside its reach.”
“It is no secret that these are historically challenging times,” said Mark Quandt, executive director of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. “Through the generosity of corporate citizens and community neighbors like Citizens Bank, we have been able to extend programming that originated during the summer to formerly underserved areas. Because our footprint covers such a widespread area, corporate support is critical to enable us to meet the mandates with which we are charged.”
The $20,000 grant to the Regional Food Bank is part of an overall investment of $100,000 from the Citizens Bank Foundation to food banks across New York in 2011.
The announcement was made at the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York in Latham, NY. The Regional Food Bank distributes to 1,000 charitable agencies feeding the hungry in 23 counties of northeastern New York. The food provided by the food bank helps to feed more than 40,000 people each week. In 2010, the organization distributed 24.9 million pounds of food to the hungry.
