The students from Ballston Spa High School’s robotics team recently participated in the Capital Region Nanotechnology High School Showcase and, based on their presentation, were selected as the winners of the event. The Showcase was held at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University at Albany and included high school students from throughout the region.

The students from Ballston Spa’s robotics team #3044 showed off what their robot could do, the retractable arm that grasps and moves inflatable rings as part of their challenge from last year’s F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Competition (FRC). Their presentation included an explanation of how nanotechnology is driving robotics. The students explained how semiconductor chips are used in the control systems for the robot, that nanotechnology has made the tools they use wear better as well as how nanotechnology is being used to develop nanobots.

The theme of the Showcase was "How Nanotechnology is Changing the World." The teams of area high school students were judged on their interpretation of this theme and their ability to demonstrate specific views on this theme. The winners were selected by a panel of expert judges from the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering. They picked the top three teams, who each received a plaque and a grant award of $250, $150 and $100 respectively. The winners included Ballston Spa High School in first place, followed by Questar III BOCES in second and the Tech Valley High School in third.

Students and parents had the opportunity to tour the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, attend special seminars and presentations by industry leaders and CNSE professors, as well as having time for networking and opportunities to meet other students interested in the nanosciences. Students also received information about pursuing nanotechnology in higher education and as a career. The Showcase was organized by the Times Union’s Classroom Enrichment Project.

The team is preparing for the challenge presented by this year’s F.I.R.S.T. contest which will be made public in early January. The FRC is an annual competition that helps high school students discover the rewards and excitement of science, engineering, and technology.
